2018 Jurors
Fan Jurors
Ben Bruinooge (BreakManZ)
Billionaire, genius, playboy, philanthropist.…these words do not describe this man. Ben has been a DJ on Dementia Radio since 2005, hosting The Power Hours and sharing his unique taste in music. Also an avid gamer, he streams on both Mixer and Twitch, especially with the game “Use Your Words”.
Jeff Morris
A quarter century ago, Jeff pioneered the idea of an internet repository for information about The Dr. Demento Show and its artists & songs. This led to the Demented Music Database (dmdb.org) and his position as Dr. Demento’s official archivist and historian. He does the tape transfers and editing for the older shows available for streaming at drdemento.com. He also runs Morris Studios (morrisstudios.com) and has worked on transferring, mixing, editing, and/or mastering artists such as Tom Lehrer, “Weird Al” Yankovic, Devo Spice, Barnes & Barnes, The Beastly Boys, and many others.
Zoe Simsay
Being a longtime fan of “Weird” Al Yankovic and Dr. Demento, Zoë Simsay continues the tradition of weird music as her Second Life Alter ego, Willow Leafstorm, on Krypton Radio. She produces three disc jockey shows, one of them called Strange Transmissions, which carries Doctor Demento’s torch of demented and funny songs.
Musician Jurors
Carrie Dahlby
Carrie Dahlby has been both a devoted fan of comedy music and a creator of it since the mid 2000s. Starting her comedy music career by singing lead female vocals for the great Luke Ski in 2005, Carrie released her first solo EP in 2006, and has released 3 full length albums since then. She has recorded vocals for numerous other male comedy musicians, thus earning herself the nickname “the Carol Cleveland of the FuMP”. One of her songs was nominated for a Logan Award. She currently spends most of her time being a full time Mom of one very spirited young boy (who has a comedy music CD of his own). The rest of her copious amounts of free time are spent performing with an early music vocal ensemble called Court and Country, taking trumpet lessons, volunteering for a non-profit called Your Whole Baby, and professing her undying love for the Aquabats.
Brett Glass
Brett Glass is an Electrical Engineer, ham radio operator (callsign WY7BG), science nonfiction author, inventor, multi-instrumentalist, and songwriter based in Laramie, Wyoming. Known to the computer community as the author of Borland’s “Turbo Pascal Tutor” (which taught tens of thousands of people to program) and as a columnist for some of the earliest computer magazines (including Dr. Dobb’s Journal of Computer Calisthenics and Orthodontia), he helped to bring up the modern Internet as a graduate student at Stanford. He also founded LARIAT, the world’s first wireless ISP, which has been operating for 25 years.
Formerly the bass player for Jim Burrill’s comedy music trio Sounds Like Fun (which performed Burrill’s frequently played song “The Doctor,”) he’s a regular performer in the Marscon Dementia Track and at FuMPFest. He also pops up at filk conventions when he is able to escape briefly from his work responsibilities. He enjoys creating complex backing tracks with digital audio workshop software, but also loves to take a bass or guitar to a bluegrass, rock, or jazz session with no prior knowledge of the songs being played, guided only by his ears and a view of a guitarist’s left hand.
Madison “Metricula” Roberts
Madison “Metricula” Roberts (she/her) is a singer-songwriter, clown, and entertainer from Raleigh, NC.
You can cozy up with her at the Nerd Music Campfire and relive the summer camp nights of your youth with sing-a-longs and smores, but nerdier! Stream tunes from her debut EP, “Songs for Gamers” for free online or pick them up via Bandcamp.
Metricula is also a co-host of the “All in the Reflexes” geek culture podcast as well as a founder of the Social Justice Bards, a group of livestreaming musicians and artists on Twitch. You can catch her live (for free!) online doing music or hosting Nasty Woman Knitting Circle, where she knits… adult novelty items.
In her muggle life, Metricula is a scientist, DIY enthusiast, and avid coffee-drinker. She’s totally not mad that the cat loves her spouse, Richard, more than her.
Follow her online basically everywhere as @metricula or find her hub at metricula.com.
Permanent Juror
Dr. Demento
Dr. Demento is the on-air name of Barret Hansen, the longtime host of The Dr. Demento Show, a syndicated radio show in the U.S. that features novelty and comedy records. Hansen studied music at Reed College in Portland, Oregon and at the University of California at Los Angeles. He first used the Dr. Demento moniker in 1970, in his early days as a Los Angeles disc jockey. By 1974 he was nationally syndicated, playing rare novelty songs from the past and present, from Spike Jones and Tom Lehrer to Frank Zappa and Weird Al Yankovic. Hansen is also an avid record collector and expert on the history of recording who has produced several compilations, mostly for Rhino Records. He was inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame in 2009. (from Infoplease.com)
The Dr. Demento Show is radio’s weekly two-hour festival of “mad music and crazy comedy” available for streaming on the internet. It is a free-wheeling, unpredictable mix of music and comedy. Along with legends like Spike Jones, Tom Lehrer, Stan Freberg, Monty Python, and Frank Zappa, the Doctor plays new funny songs sent in by amateur and professional singers and comedians. A documentary film about Dr. Demento, “Under the Smogberry Trees,” is currently in production.
